About Us

Ok, so we are a bunch of randomly gathered ‘scientists’ (chemists, railway engineers, medical researchers etc.), whose tenuous connection is our participation in the British Science Association’s perspectives competition in 2009. Some are young, exuberant, excited PhD students and others are old, cynical and grumpy post-docs (I’ll leave it to you to work out whom). Those of us that have made it this far are really, really into science (and engineering) in all its wondrous forms and want to tell you, the humble reader, all about it. Hopefully we’ll be throwing out loads of opinions and experiences and general abstract philosophy your way and have some fun while we are at it.

Our authors:

Josh Howgego

Josh is studying for a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bristol. Supramolecular chemistry, since you ask. Josh has been blogging for nearly a year now on his first blog, benchtwentyone (see links on the main page). he’s also written for a couple of magzines. With his head in a round bottom flask for most days, Josh is fascinated by molecules. He often likes to write about his favourite ones and wants to persuade you, with his ‘molecule of the month’ features, that they can be interesting and even quite relevant to how we live our everyday lives. They are all around us, after all.

Ross Harrington

Becky Broadbent

Becky has a background in mechanical engineering.  She is currently working for an educational charity as an Education Officer whilst also studying part-time for a PhD in the field of railway dynamics at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, Southampton.  Science and engineering of all types interest her, from experiments which everyone can carry out at home to the fascinating and bewildering work of the worlds top scientists.  She does not claim to follow and understand everything that she is interested in!

Bethan Lowder

Bethan can be found at the University of Edinburgh studying for a PhD in microbiology, hoping to answer some questions about the evolution of bacteria. She has an interest in all things biological and a slight Charles Darwin obsession. Always on the lookout for ways to get people excited about science, and to get them thinking about important scientific issues, this is Bethan’s first venture into the world of blogging.  Keep reading, and hopefully you will learn something new!
